It's Sunday with Dan | 2023 July 9

For those of you not fortunate enough to live in the cultural Utopia of southwest Missouri you have been spared the barrage of television commercials promoting the appearance of the musical "One Night in Memphis." It tries to recreate the impromptu jam session at Sun studios involving Elvis, Jerry Lee, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins. The Elvis imitator wears a white suit and writhes on the stage floor like Iggy Pop. The Carl Perkins imitator does a Chuck Berry duckwalk. The Johnny Cash imitator is the size of Kevin James. The Jerry Lee Lewis imitator does not show his face, which is probably smart.

In the same vein of imitators we had today's guests on "Meet The Press." The first out of the chute was the Republican governor of North Dakota Doug Burgum. He sold his software company to Microsoft. He is now officially a billionaire. He is also running for president. He declared that he is not running on social issues, but he passed a law in his state that criminalizes abortions after 6 weeks. When asked about federal laws on issues concerning LBGTQ concerns he cleared his throat and sang the favorite song of state's rights proponents Candi Staton's 1976 classic "Young Hearts Run Free." In a classic soap opera acting moment he rolled his eyes and turned his head for 24 seconds when asked one good thing Joe Biden has done as president.

Batting second on this spellbinding hour was the Democratic Governor of New Jersey Phil Murphy. His top five campaign contributors include the always creepy combo plate of doctors and funeral directors. When asked why Joe Biden will win reelection he used the words of the immortal David Brinkley: "Because. Just because". He also opined that our current Supreme Court doesn't play by the rules. If anyone can dm me the rules of the Supreme Court please do.

In related Sunday morning news Shannon Bream only lied 3 times about the size of the attendance at Donnie "Who's your daddy" Trump's rally in South Carolina, and it was enlightening to hear the socio-political analysis of former NFL cheerleader Emily Compagno on Fox "News" Sunday. If only Mike Shannon was still around.
